Over time the castle, as well as the various military structures of Lisbon, was being refurbished, to the point of the first half of the twentieth century is already in an advanced state of disrepair. In the 1940's monumental works were undertaken reconstruction, rising most of the walls and spread out many of the towers. Therefore, contrary to what one might think at first glance, the "medieval character" of the military should set up this campaign of reconstruction, and not the maintenance of the castle from the Middle Ages to the present day.
It stands in a dominant position on the highest hill of the historic center, offering visitors the most beautiful views of the city and the estuary of the Tagus river .
