Rio Tejo, Lisbon - 2

The Tagus River is the river in the port of Lisbon.

It empties into the Atlantic Ocean , forming the estuary called the Sea of Straw , the most important of the Iberian Peninsula , both by size and by socio-demographic relevance. In the north, this area is legally protected by the Nature Reserve of the Tagus Estuary , created in 1916 , with an area of 14,560 hectares.

Here integrate wetlands, mud, salt, islets and agricultural land, every winter, provide shelter to about 80,000 birds. The town of Montijo , on the left bank of the estuary, can be considered as the main locality of reference of this protected area...

Every year in the port of Lisbon, dock hundreds of luxury liners, especially in the dock Alcantara . In its estuary there is an ecological reserve ( Natural Reserve of the Tagus Estuary , based in Alcochete ) where nest several species of birds . Due to the high pollution of the river ceased to exist dolphins , rarely showing a copy which enters the estuary by mistake, going back to March when possible.
