The Tagus River is the river 's longest Iberian Peninsula . Its basin is the third longest in the peninsula after the Douro and the Ebro River . Born in Spain - where it is known as the Tajo - the 1593 m altitude in the Sierra de Albarracin , and empties into the Atlantic Ocean , bathing Lisbon , after a journey of about 1007 km. Its catchment area is 80 600 km (55,750 km in Spain and 24,850 km in Portugal), being the second most important of the Iberian Peninsula after the river Ebro .
